Berlin [Portrait Monteverdi Choir]
Baroque
Founded by Gerhard Oppelt, the Monteverdi Choir is dedicated to the performance of sacred vocal music of the 17th and early 18th century.

In its inaugural performance the young ensemble celebrated a resounding success with the Monteverdi Vespers in the Berlin Cathedral. In collaboration with the ensemble Berlin Baroque and renowned soloists there were subsequent concerts of Bach cantatas and oratorios. In 1995 particular praise was given to a performance of Bach's b minor mass in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie.

Further concerts of the complete cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio (1994 & 1996) and St. John Passion (1995 & 1996) delighted audiences. In April 1997 the Monteverdi Choir Berlin was invited by the Syrian Cultural Ministry to perform in Damascus. The choir has subsequently given numerous concerts of, among other works, J. S. Bach's Motets and G. F. Handel's Messiah.

Since 2002 the Monteverdi Choir Berlin has further concentrated on interpreting newly discovered vocal works by the Berlin composer Johann Crueger (1598-1662).

In June 2002 they were invited by the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Foundation for Prussian Cultural Heritage) to perform in the Gemaeldegalerie (Berlin Painting Gallery). Following this they gave further performances of newly edited works by Johann Crueger and the Cantor Bartholomaeus Gesius (ca. 1560-1613 Frankfurt/Oder).

The members of the young ensemble are semi professional singers which allows for the highest possible attention to nuance in articulation and differentiated dynamic variation in their historical performances. It is this attention to detail which has earned the choir great reputation not only within the Berlin Early music scene but also beyond.
